Study Tips

1.Go to class.
  • Writing good notes improves retention and is a valuable reference.
2.
  • Generally, significant points are awarded for work performed in class.
2.Read the book.
1.
  • Learning is less likely to occur during lecture unless the material has been processed to the point where the listener can formulate particular questions to answer. Most people have difficulty thinking fast enough to ask all of their questions during lecture.
2.
  • The book is a student’s best resource for definitive, testable material.
3.Understand the examples.1.
  • Examples are designed to introduce the most IMPORTANT concepts in a section. Thorough understanding of the examples will give students tools necessary to tackle complex word problems.
4.Work comprehensive word problems.
1.
  • Practice minimizes the amout of time you require in order to recognize what the questions are asking. This is the most difficult step in solving problems!
2.
  • Practice also drastically reduces common errors in thinking.
5.Ask questions.
1.
  • Chemistry knowledge builds on itself. Weaknesses in a foundation can magnify as time goes on. Overcome your discomfort and get your questions answered!
2.
  • The professors here LOVE to teach and they want to get to know you. You have nothing to lose but your discomfort.
6.Stay focused.
1.
  • This is the hardest part. Look at the people and places around you. If they are not helping you learn, they are helping you to fail. Surround yourself with motivated people who are going somewhere.
2.
  • Your first attempt at educating yourself is your best chance to succeed. It only gets harder as time goes on.
